There are 3.2 billion games in the world according to Statista.
There are 100 million people in the world who own crypto.
When these two worlds converge, the crypto space will explode.
Gaming will make the NFT explosion look weak.
I am dedicating a significant portion of my portfolio to gaming cryptos. I believe that they will provide some of the best returns of our lifetime.
Here are my thoughts on gaming cryptos. Feedback and critique are welcomed.
I split gaming cryptos into three categories:
Play to earn games
Gaming distribution platforms and publishers
Gaming tools, infrastructure, and blockchains
Play To Earn Games
My biggest P2E gaming bags
ILV
SAND
UFO
FINA
QBIT
MONI
Traditionally, games have a short life cycle, quickly peaking when released and dying out over the next year.
There are some notable exceptions like WoW, Dota, LoL, EFT, but most games are ngmi beyond two years.
So, I view my P2E gaming bags as medium-term investments. Even the best games may not be around more than a few years.
It’s hard to predict the peak of a game's popularity, but it is something that you should think about when investing in one. You should assume that after a game’s release, it won’t be long for a new and better game to steal its player base, in most cases.
For me, this means I should employ an aggressive profit taking strategy for P2E games.
Gaming Distribution Platforms & Publishers
My biggest bags in this category
PYR
GALA
NAKA
I wish I could find more in this category, but I can’t. Hit me up on Twitter @ladyofcrypto1 if you want to shill me some.
Steam is the biggest game distribution platform in the world. They have recently taken a tough stance against NFT based games. I want to get in early on the blockchain version of Steam.
At the moment, PYR and GALA could end up in the position, but it’s early days. I will be on the lookout for projects that fit within this category.
They do not necessarily need to be distribution platforms, they could just be publishers like Ubisoft or EA are. Although, the two seem to go hand in hand these days.
Gaming Tools, Infrastructure & Blockchains
My largest bags in this category are
VRA
Matic
Solana
In my opinion, this category is where you want to invest for stable, long-term returns.
They may not blow up and do a 1000x like P2E games. However, they are unlikely to crash and burn like P2E games.
Even if you are not focused on gaming, blockchains like Matic and Solana are a good long-term investment. With most games being built on these two blockchains, we could see parabolic rises in SOL and MATIC.
A project like VRA that provides a whole range of tools to developers, streamers, esports players, and holds patents for some of these tools is also a good long-term investment.
My Approach
I am, for the most part, a sensible investor with a long-term outlook. My approach to gaming cryptos is long-term.
As an example, let’s imagine my crypto portfolio is $20,000. I want to dedicate 50% ($10k) of that to gaming.
The $10k dedicated to gaming is then split 30/20/50 as follows:
P2E Games - 30% ($3k)
Distribution Platforms & Publishers- 20% ($2k)
Gaming infrastructure & tools - 50% ($5k)
P2E games - 30%
These are likely to give you the highest return, but they are by far the highest risk because most P2E games will die or rug.
It’s known in gaming that most alpha games rug or end up taking years longer to finish than anticipated.
P2E gaming has the added complication of creating both a token and a game and balancing the two.
I believe that most P2E gaming investments will lead to losing money or making insignificant returns. For this reason, I cannot justify putting the bulk of my portfolio into P2E games. This is why I am investing only 30%
Distribution Platforms & Publishers - 20%
This is the smallest allocation because there are not many cryptos that fit into the category.
I would like some exposure to distribution platforms in case I catch the next Steam early on. The returns from this category of gaming crypto are unlikely to be as good as P2E games, and unlikely to be as safe as the next category.
Gaming Infrastructure & Tools - 50%
This is where the bulk of my gaming portfolio will be invested. I expect projects in this category to provide stable returns over the long term.
I will focus my investments on safe cryptos, with good teams, multiple uses, and hopefully the ability to stake for passive returns.
Why This Approach
It is very easy to become overexposed in the P2E gaming category because there are a lot of games being developed at the moment. The reality is, most of these games will never make it out of the concept stage.
I do not want to be overexposed trying to hit a short term 1000x Axie type gain while neglecting what will make me safer, and more reliable returns.
I hope this was helpful 🙂
